To right and left of the main gateway were the schools of the Seven Liberal Arts the Trivium, the three elementary subjects of Grammar, Rhetoric, and Logic; and the Quadrivium, the more advanced course of Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, and Astronomy); the two tongues (Greek and Hebrew); and the three Philosophies (Natural, Moral, and Metaphysical); all these were required for the Arts degree. Across the quadrangle were the superior Faculties of Theology (the Divinity School, seen through the Library entrance), Medicine, and Law.
