Jan Hus, a 15th-century religious reformer, was burnt at the stake in 1415 for heresy. The nearby Church of Our Lady before Tyn was a center of the Hussite movement in Bohemia. Hus became a symbol of Czech desire for religious and political independence. His motto "truth will prevail" was chanted during the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
